Chandler Heights Road Improvement Project: McQueen to Gilbert roads

Learn more about the Chandler Heights Road Improvement Project, Gilbert Road to Val Vista Drive.

(Project Nos. ST1614.401 / CHN0240D / T009901C)

The City of Chandler has contracted with Granite Construction and Ardurra Group for construction which began in August to widen Chandler Heights Road to a minimum of four lanes (two lanes in each direction), from McQueen to Gilbert Road. Improvements include construction of raised medians, bike lanes, center turn lanes, sidewalks, curb/gutter, landscaping, and utility relocations.

The project also includes drainage improvements such as retention basins and concrete scuppers to accommodate future drainage needs in the project area. In addition, there will be improvements to traffic signals and the traffic signal interconnect, as well as new LED street lighting and conversion of overhead electric to underground.

Construction is currently expected to be complete in Summer 2024.

Construction Information (June 20, 2024):

  • Chandler Heights Road traffic, from Cooper Road to McQueen Road, is currently shifted to the south side of the road, one lane in each direction, for work to take place on the north side of Chandler Heights. Bedford Drive, Senate Street, and Tower Avenue are currently closed on the north side of Chandler Heights Road to accommodate work in that area. Detour signage is in place to direct travelers around the closures.
  • Scheduled for Friday, June 21, crews are scheduled to pave the base course (bottom layer) of asphalt of the inside lanes (nearest the median) of Chandler Heights Road, from Cooper to Gilbert.
  • Scheduled for early the week of June 24, paving will take place for the base course (bottom layer) of asphalt on Chandler Heights Road, from McQueen Road to Senate Street. Traffic control will change during this process to accommodate the paving, so please drive with caution and obey traffic signage. As paving crosses side streets or driveways, there may be brief periods where access is restricted, but crews will work to the extent possible to restore access as quickly as possible.
  • Following the paving activity, Senate Street, Bedford, and Tower on the north side of Chandler Heights Road should be reopened.
  • Scheduled to begin mid next week, crews will work in the middle of Chandler Heights Road at Senate Street on median tie-in's and curbing. To accommodate this work, left turns will not be permitted to/from Senate, but right turns in/out will be permitted. Paving back of this area is currently scheduled to take place Friday, July 5.
  • Scheduled for late next week, paving will take place on the surface course (top layer) of asphalt on all lanes from Cooper to Gilbert, with the outside lanes first, followed by the inside lanes, and turn bays. Traffic control will change throughout the week to accommodate the paving, so please drive with caution and obey traffic signage. As paving crosses side streets or driveways, there may be brief periods where access is restricted, but crews will work to the extent possible to restore access as quickly as possible.
  • Electric crews continue work on improvements to the traffic signal at Adams Avenue.
  • SRP crews are scheduled to be in the area in the next couple of weeks to pull wire to energize street lights.
  • Access to residences and businesses is being maintained.
