The ASPIRE Read To Succeed! Tutoring Program aims to improve reading skills of 1st graders through direct instruction by a trained volunteer, with no more than four (4) students per tutor. By the end of the school year, with consistent attendance, students will show improved reading and language skills.
ASPIRE Read to Succeed (ARTS) will be conducted at our Housing Youth Center located at 71 S. Hamilton. Tutoring sessions occur twice a week Tuesday and Thursday from 4 - 5 p.m. Transportation is provided by the Housing Youth Program. Days of the week and a starting date will be determined once assessment testing is completed. Students are placed depending on their assessed reading levels and available space in the groups.
Placement and Application
Potential program participants will complete an assessment test in August. Those who qualify will begin their tutoring sessions the first week in September. (Tutoring sessions will follow the school calendar; there will be no tutoring sessions on school holidays and breaks.)
To participate, please complete the application and return it to the City of Chandler’s Housing Office, on-site Recreation Room/Youth Program Staff by Aug. 12. Upon completion, a staff member will contact the participants' parents to schedule an assessment and offered tutoring time. Students are placed in a tutoring session depending on their assessed reading levels and space in the classes.
For information on joining during the school year, contact Heather Callis at 480-782-3244.
