Chandler is committed to making our streets safer for everyone by reducing red light running and speeding. To help achieve this, Chandler has joined other Valley communities in using photo enforcement technology at key intersections with a history of frequent crashes and violations.
The primary goal of both the Red Light Photo Enforcement and Speed on Green programs is simple: reduce crashes and their severity by encouraging safer driving habits. Studies, both nationally and locally, show that intersections with photo enforcement cameras see a significant drop in the number of crashes.
Red Light Photo Enforcement
24/7 Monitoring: While Chandler's Police Department works tirelessly to keep our streets safe, the Red Light Photo Enforcement Program provides round‐the‐clock monitoring at some of our busiest intersections. Cameras are installed to catch drivers who run red lights or speed through intersections, even when the light is green.
Understanding Your Citation: If you receive a citation through this program, it will include photos showing the violation. This allows you to review the situation and understand why the citation was issued. You have the option to either pay the fine or attend traffic school to address the citation.
Speed on Green Enforcement
In addition to red light enforcement, Chandler has implemented the Speed on Green Enforcement Program. This program helps monitor intersections where speeding is a common issue.
Cameras are activated not only when drivers run a red light but also when they exceed the posted speed limit.
Speed Reader Boards for Safety Awareness
To enhance driver awareness and promote safer driving, speed reader boards are installed as you approach intersections monitored by photo enforcement cameras. These boards provide real‐time feedback on your speed, giving you ample opportunity to slow down before entering the intersection.
Additionally, photo enforcement warning signs are placed approximately half a mile before these intersections, ensuring that drivers are well‐informed and can adjust their speed accordingly, further contributing to a safer driving environment in Chandler.
Revenue Neutrality
Our Red Light Photo Enforcement Program is designed with a focus on safety rather than profit. The program aims to be as revenue‐neutral as possible, meaning that any funds generated beyond the cost of equipment and operation are reinvested into programs dedicated to improving traffic safety across Chandler. This ensures that the primary goal of the program remains the protection of our community, making our roads safer for everyone.
