Holiday Recycling Tips

The holidays bring with them a return of our favorite foods, activities and traditions. This year, make it a tradition to celebrate sustainably and recycle right with your friends and family all season long.

Here are some tips on how to reduce, reuse and recycle in Chandler over the holidays.

Holiday Tip #1: Make sure boxes are completely empty and flat before recycling. Large sizes or quantities can be picked up through bulk pick-up or dropped off at the Recycling-Solid Waste Collection Center.
Holiday Tip #2: Flexible plastic such as bags, bubble wrap, air billows, storage bags, and food wrap is not recyclable in curbside containers. Take to recycle bins inside grocery stores.
Holiday Tip #3: Don't pour cooking oil or grease down the drain. Drop it off at the Household Hazardous Waste Center so it can be recycled into bio-diesel fuel.
Holiday Tip #4: Polystyrene foam packaging including packing peanuts is not recyclable. Reuse foam when shipping presents, moving or it to use to fill the bottom of large plant pots.
Holiday Tip #5: Recycle real trees through the city’s tree recycling program. Trees are chipped and reused by the Parks Department.
Holiday Tip #6: Skip single-use plastic. Make meals special by using cloth napkins, drinking glasses and silverware.
Holiday Tip #7: Choose cardboard egg cartons as they are recyclable or reusable; the foam ones are not.
Holiday Tip #8: Make recycling easy for guests. Place a recycling basket next to the trash and post a list of what is & isn’t’ recyclable.
Holiday Tip #9: Avoid gag or one-time-use gifts that are destined for the trash. Consider buying experience gifts for meaningful memories and no waste.
Holiday Tip #10: Skip or limit gift wrapping paper, bags, ribbons and bows as they are not recyclable.
Holiday Tip #11: Out with the old and in with the new. Before or after the holidays consider donating what you no longer need, but someone else may enjoy.
Holiday Tip #12: Alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, 9Volt) can be bagged, tied and tossed in the trash safely when they are dead. Auto and rechargeable batteries must never be placed in trash or recycling bins.
