Local Beyond the Shop initiative aims to reduce stigma
The cities of Tempe and Chandler are recruiting local barbers and stylists to become mental health advocates to lift up their clients and communities as part of a national effort to reduce the stigma around mental health.
Barbers and stylists are already trusted voices for those sitting in their chairs. The Beyond the Shop initiative encourages professionals to do even more. As trained mental health advocates, barbers and stylists can support clients who may be struggling by connecting them with life-changing resources that boost health and wellness.
The cities of Tempe and Chandler, along with partner Downtown Tempe Authority, invite barbers and stylists to a free training Monday, Feb. 3 at the Tempe EnVision Center, 1310 E. Apache Blvd. Participants will:
- Learn how to create an environment where critical conversations can take place without fear or stigma.
- Get tools and resources that can help clients thrive emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
- Be among the thousands of barbers and stylists across the country who are trained to make a difference in their communities.
Space is limited and barbers and stylists are asked to register in advance.
Beyond the Shop is a national movement designed to foster mental health advocacy in marginal and underrepresented communities. Through the local Beyond the Shop initiative, the City of Tempe, in partnership with the City of City of Chandler and Downtown Tempe Authority, aims to enhance mental health resources for those in need.
“Through the friendly influence of barbers and stylists, we are helping to transform the narrative around mental health and foster a healthier, more resilient future for our residents. We’re thrilled to bring this proactive approach to Tempe and Chandler,” said Tempe Vice Mayor Doreen Garlid.
“Barbers and stylists are pillars of our community, offering a space where people feel comfortable and connected. Through this initiative, we’re empowering these trusted professionals to become advocates for mental health and wellness. This collaborative effort with our neighboring city of Tempe reinforces our city’s commitment to fostering a supportive and compassionate environment for all residents,” said Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke.
Local barbers and stylists also have two more ways to get involved in their communities.
Downtown Tempe Authority’s Barber Battle Series takes place through June at 2nd Sundays on Mill, with the final event scheduled for the Downtown Tempe Juneteenth Block Party. Apply for the Barber Battle.
Barbers and stylists are invited to attend a free Industry and Community Mixer from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2 at the Tempe Envision Center. Register in advance.
