CHANDLER, Ariz. – As one of the most prolific graphic designers and printmakers in the Phoenix area, Jon Arvizu has been at the service of the local community for the majority of his career. Whether teaching students the art of printmaking or creating apparel designs for commercial clients, Arvizu regularly assists others in their visual pursuits. Arvizu began his career 25 years ago at Fossil, and in 2001, he moved to the Valley where he has cemented himself within the visual culture.
But how does a creative that is always helping others help himself? What happens to a creative that has an honest awakening and realizes he needs to pour some loving attention into himself?
The new exhibition at Chandler Museum, “I Can’t Help Myself,” was born of stolen moments, sliced out of precious free time between scheduled workshops and product deliveries. The result is an exploration of self-love and introspection as seen through the lens of music and the imagery of tarot cards. Throughout all the works are repeated images which “echo” to reinforce the theme of transformation. The deeply personal prints and site-specific murals contribute to Arvizu’s examination of his past, present, and potential futures.
As Arvizu states, “I put many loving details into my work. Please look closer and see what you can find—it will be worth it.”
About the exhibition, Arvizu said, “The exhibit is a personal exploration of work I have done for myself, for self-fulfillment – created with skills honed as a working illustrator and printmaker. The artwork is visually interesting, but the meaning is all my own. I believe if you come into the exhibit, it's going to bring up questions and give you a reason to look closer. Good luck finding all the hearts and hidden symbolism.”
“I Can’t Help Myself” is open now through June 8, 2025 at the Chandler Museum. The Chandler Museum is located 300 S. Chandler Village Drive. It is open Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday 1-5 p.m. and closed on Mondays. Admission is free.
