CHANDLER, Ariz. –  The Chandler Fire Department is proud to announce the launch of its new Crisis Intervention Opioid Response Unit/Program (CR2840), a specialized initiative aimed at providing immediate support to individuals affected by substance use disorders and opioid overdoses. This program will feature a team of trained crisis response professionals dedicated to offering critical intervention services at the scene of overdoses, including emotional support, educational resources and life-saving treatments.

The CR2840 unit’s primary objective is to save lives by providing Narcan (naloxone), a medication that can reverse the effects of opioid overdoses and restore normal breathing. The unit will distribute Narcan nasal spray to individuals at risk of overdose, as well as to their friends and family members, ensuring that those in need have access to this life-saving tool.

“Our mission is to offer more than just an emergency response. We are committed to helping individuals in crisis navigate the path to recovery,” said Yasmin Barker, senior crisis interventionist for Chandler Fire Department. “By equipping the community with Narcan and providing immediate support, we are taking an important step to reduce the impact of the opioid epidemic in Chandler.”

Crisis response professionals will be dispatched to 911 calls related to opioid overdoses, providing on-scene support and referrals to recovery services. In addition to Narcan distribution, the CR2840 team will offer education on prevention, signs of overdose, and the importance of early intervention.

The program is designed to work in tandem with other local agencies/hospitals to reduce overdose-related deaths and assist those struggling with opioid use disorder. By empowering family members, friends and the community with the knowledge and tools to act quickly in overdose situations, CR2840 aims to make a meaningful difference in saving lives and supporting long-term recovery.

The Chandler Fire Department is excited to bring this vital service to the community and remains committed to providing innovative solutions for public safety and well-being.
