CHANDLER, Ariz. - The Chandler City Council awarded a Professional Services Agreement to Consultant Engineering, Inc. for construction management services, and a Construction Agreement with Granite Construction Company for the construction of the Frye Road Protected Bike Lane project.

Federal grant funding will be utilized to make streetscape improvements and upgrade the existing Frye Road bicycle lanes that connect surrounding neighborhoods, schools, downtown Chandler and the Paseo Trail System.

During outreach for the Transportation Master Plan in 2019, residents requested bike facilities that provide enhanced safety and connectivity. This is the first project stemming from the Transportation Master Plan to make a concerted effort to accomplish this goal.

Mayor Kevin Hartke commented, “This is an exciting project — a first of its kind in Chandler. It will create a more comfortable biking environment for an array of users without removing any vehicular lanes. People of all abilities, and especially those who are newer cyclists, can now bike more confidently, and will be better able to connect to the amenities in Downtown Chander, schools, the Paseo Trail and beyond.”

The project is located on Frye Road, spanning from San Marcos Park (Fairview Street) to the Paseo Trail (approximately 2.5 miles), and will connect to downtown Chandler and five Chandler Unified School District schools. The new bike corridor will provide horizontal separation and vertical elements to separate bike lanes from vehicular lanes.

New monument signs, art, and landscaping will enhance aesthetics in the corridor. Additionally, the city is leveraging grant funding to upgrade the corridor for all users, including a full roadway repaving and replacement of aging streetlights.

Construction is expected to begin in early March. Find project updates.
