The City of Chandler’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Division, Community Services and Police Department will be hosting a free community event featuring a screening of “In A Different Key”, a documentary that explores autism through the story of the first person diagnosed and highlights the transformative role of a supportive community. Following the film, there will be a panel discussion with speakers from local organizations who will provide valuable insights on autism and local resources for support.
“In A Different Key” tells the powerful story of a mother searching for answers about autism by tracking down the first person ever diagnosed with the condition—Donald Triplett, an elderly man still living in the rural Mississippi town where he was born nearly 90 years ago. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-nominated book by journalists Caren Zucker and John Donvan, this award-winning documentary explores themes of love, difference and belonging — exposing a startling history of cruelty and kindness shaped by forces like race, money and privilege. Winner of the Robert F. Kennedy Prize, “In A Different Key” is ultimately a story of hope, showing how far we’ve come—and how much further we can go—in embracing those who are “different.
This movie is recommended for audiences aged 15 and older due to its sensitive content.
Registration is required for this event and space is limited.
