Hangar Safety Checklist

Building Exterior

• Are "no smoking" requirements being maintained?
• Is the hangar unit number properly displayed on the building, with the numbers contrasting with the background?

Clearance Around Aircraft

• Is the area in front of the aircraft clear?
• Is the area under the aircraft clear?
• Is there 36 inches of clear egress around aircraft?
• Is there clear egress throughout the hangar?

Construction Features

• Are there any holes in the walls?
• Have all construction/improvements been permitted?
• Have any internal walls been removed?

Electrical Equipment

• Are all electrical outlets and lighting approved?
• Are extension cords unplugged and stored?
• Are non-rated appliances raised at least 18 inches from the door?
• Is the electrical wiring/equipment free from hazards?

Fire Extinguishers

• Are extinguishers a minimum Type 2A-10-BC?
• Are extinguishers at each hangar door?
• Are extinguishers properly mounted?
• Are the extinguishers properly maintained?
• Are there an adequate number of fire extinguishers?
• Does the tug vehicle have an approved 20BC extinguisher?

Fire Lanes

• Are fire lanes free from obstructions?
• Are fire lanes properly marked and maintained?

Hazardous Material (Hazmat)

• Are batteries being charged out of the aircraft?
• Are battery chargers of when the hangar is unoccupied?
• Are flammables stored away from combustibles?
• Are gas cylinders over four feet tall secured?
• Are hot or spraying operations being conducted?
• Are oily rags properly stored and disposed of?
• Are parts cleaners properly maintained?
• Is all the hazmat properly stored?
• Is an approved oil drip pan in place?
• Is the hangar free of explosives and ammunition?
• Is the hangar free of LPG (propane)?

Miscellaneous

• Is the allowable small rug rolled up and secured?
• Is the floor free of rugs?

Storage

• Are combustible materials kept to a minimum?
• Do operational vehicles cause clearance issues?
• Do wall-mounted storage units weigh less than five pounds per piece?
• Is all storage aircraft operation-related?
• Is rack storage approved?
• Is storage below the approved height? (no higher than 12 feet)
• Is the overall storage orderly and safe?
• Is there more than one airport transport vehicle?
