In the city’s continuous effort to make Chandler a more inclusive and equitable place to live, work and thrive, the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Division is spearheading an initiative to remove language communication barriers by bringing translation technology to customer-facing city departments.
Additionally, access to trained live interpreters including American Sign Language (ASL) is available in multiple languages using on-demand video and audio and/or the ability to integrate with existing department translation and interpreter services. Moreover, the option for broadcasting events for one-way communication using a QR code for translation in the chosen language to a person’s cell phone is an added value for the user experience.
The intent of the device is to view translation technology as an additional communication tool, and in no way is being used to eliminate human interaction with our staff that provide translation support when delivering essential services to the community.
In addition to providing improved communication, the devices are expected to enhance the customer service experience and to increase productivity when delivering essential services.
The city will also be utilizing “broadcast mode” technology at select city public events. This “broadcast mode” service allows a single-speaker presentation to be translated into any language on any attendee's smartphone. Stay tuned for dates and information on “broadcast mode” events soon.
