Language Assistance Technology Assessment

In the city’s ongoing effort to make Chandler a more inclusive and equitable place to live, work, and thrive, the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Division has launched a new initiative to reduce language barriers by introducing instant language translation technology across customer-facing city departments.

In addition to this new technology, access to trained live interpreters, including American Sign Language (ASL), is available in multiple languages through on-demand video and audio services. These tools can also integrate with existing department translation and interpreter services.

An added feature includes the ability to broadcast presentations or announcements using a QR code that delivers real-time, one-way translations to a person’s cell phone in their preferred language, enhancing accessibility and user experience.

This translation technology is meant to complement, not replace, human interaction. Staff will continue to offer in-person translation support to ensure essential services are delivered with a personal touch.

Not only does this effort improve communication, but it also enhances the overall customer service experience and increases efficiency across departments.

The City of Chandler will also introduce “broadcast mode” at select public events. This feature enables real-time translation of a single-speaker presentation directly to attendees' smartphones, regardless of language.
