The Chandler City Council recognizes Chandler Municipal Airport (CHD) as a vital strategic resource to the city. In fact, the Council recently proclaimed July 2023 as Aviation Appreciation Month in honor of Chandler Municipal Airport’s 75th anniversary at its current location near McQueen and Germann roads.
Aviation is a huge part of the city’s history. In fact, Dr. A.J. Chandler himself envisioned the city as having an airport when he founded Chandler. We’re sure Dr. Chandler would be impressed to know that his vision for an airport ended up as one of the busiest general aviation airports in the country.
For the past 75 years, CHD has been an essential part of the state’s and nation’s aviation network. General aviation in Arizona accounts for $3.3 billion in economic activity, supports nearly 19,000 jobs, and $1.1 billion in salaries and wages. CHD represents a diverse and important public benefit, utilizing rapid, safe and efficient on-demand air transportation to and from communities of all sizes across the country into Chandler.
For the remainder of the year through Jan. 20, 2024, city staff from Chandler Municipal Airport (CHD) and Chandler Museum will be sharing facts and interesting bits of history about CHD on the city’s social media sites. Residents and aviation enthusiasts are encouraged to connect with the city’s social media sites at @cityofchandler. The anniversary celebration will culminate with a community event (Airport Days) on Saturday, Jan 20, 2024. Be sure to save the date!
