Smartscape program comes to Chandler

Chandler will become “Desert Landscape Central” in August as the University of Arizona’s Cooperative Extension Service and Arizona Municipal Water User’s Association bring their Smartscape training and certification program to Chandler City Hall.

Smartscape teaches the essential skills to plan, create, and care for water-efficient landscapes in the desert Southwest and targets landscape industry professionals and others, including those working for municipal parks and recreation departments, landscaping companies, nurseries, and landscape design firms.

The eight-class Smartscape series will be held every Monday and Wednesday from 3 to 5:30 p.m. beginning Monday August 6 through Wednesday, August 29 at Chandler City Hall, 2nd Floor Training Room A, 175 S. Arizona Avenue.

Smartscape delivers 20 hours of high-quality education on the best irrigation and horticultural practices for the desert Southwest and will feature an outstanding speaker lineup, including Dr. Ursula Schuch, University of Arizona plant scientist and researcher, and Kirti Mathura, horticulturist and author.

Registration is $75 and participants will receive a Smartscape manual, instruction from experts in the green industry, plus snacks and refreshments. Program graduates will receive a certificate of completion, decals and a lapel pin and the opportunity to market themselves as Smartscape Certified professionals by listing their contact information in the Smartscape online directory, (http:www.amwua.org/ss_directory.html). This directory is a valuable resource for homeowners looking to hire knowledgeable and trained landscape professionals.

Smartscape is endorsed by the Arizona Nursery Association and the Arizona Landscape Contractors Association. Registration forms can be printed by downloading a copy from http://extension.arizona.edu/maricopa/smartscape-program. More information is available by contacting Haley Paul, Smartscape Program Coordinator, at hepaul@cals.arizona.edu or call (602) 827-8200 x395.
