Recap of the Chandler City Council Meeting on May 24

The Chandler City Council met at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 24, and took action on 45 agenda items, including:
  • Approved a resolution authorizing the Enhanced Municipal Services District (EMSD) Agreement for Fiscal Year 2018-2019, with the Downtown Chandler Community Partnership, and authorizing the City’s voluntary contribution to the EMSD in the amount of $118,804.
  • Approved a resolution adopting the Fiscal Year (FY) 2018-19 Tentative Budget and 2019-2028 Tentative Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and giving notice of a public hearing on June 14 for final adoption of the budget, and another public meeting on June 28 for setting the tax levies and tax rates.
  • Approved a resolution adopting the prohibitions of the City’s Anti-Harassment and Anti-Bullying Policy to apply to the City Council and members of City’s boards and commissions and adopting related procedures.
  • Approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the City of Chandler and each of the following three organizations: Chandler Law Enforcement Association (CLEA), Chandler Lieutenants and Police Sergeants Association (CLASA) and International Association of Firefighters (IAFF). The MOUs are for a two-year period, July 1, 2018, through June 30, 2020.
  • Approved an agreement with Information Display Company, for the purchase of 10 speed display signs, in an amount not to exceed $143,842. Six of the signs will be placed at two intersections in an effort to improve safety. These are in addition to the 73 speed reader boards currently in operation at 20 Chandler intersections.
  • Approved a Professional Services Contract with Kimley-Horn and Associates, for design services for Chandler Heights road improvements, from Gilbert Road to Val Vista Road, in an amount not to exceed $1,531,194.
  • Approved the purchase of sport field lighting and installation services from Musco Sports Lighting, LLC, in the amount of $317,000, for lighting two large multi-use fields at Tumbleweed Park.
  • Approved an ordinance forming a 2020 Census Complete Count Committee to guide efforts to encourage public response for the 2020 Census and obtain a successful and accurate complete count.
Chandler City CouncilAt the conclusion of the meeting, Mayor Jay Tibshraeny, members of the City Council and City Manager Marsha Reed thanked Vice Mayor Nora Ellen for her years of service to Chandler. Vice Mayor Ellen is resigning on May 30 to pursue election to the State legislature.
 
During a Study Session on Monday, May 21, Mayor Tibshraeny and the City Council recognized four employees for their service to the City of Chandler.
Assistant City Manager Nachie Marquez was recognized prior to her upcoming retirement after 17 years of service to the community. Library Aide Inez Perreault was recognized for retiring after 30 years of service. Public Works & Utilities Department Director John Knudson was recognized for his 15 years of service. Chandler Police Officer Mike West was recognized for 20 years of service.
 
The Mayor and Council also recognized members of the Si Se Puede Sci Girls for their work in the STEM sciences and success in recent robotics competitions. The members of the Seton Catholic Prep Academic Decathlon Team were also recognized for winning numerous medals in a national competition.
