Celebrate Water Safety Awareness Day at Hamilton Aquatic Center May 5

Help your kids build the skills needed to stay safe in and around water by attending Water Safety Awareness Day from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, at the Hamilton Aquatic Center, 3838 S. Arizona Ave. The free event falls during National Water Safety Month and aims to educate children and their families about ways to stay safe in and around water.

The family-friendly event will include free games and public swim, plus Aquatics staff will simulate a water rescue and provide CPR demonstrations and information on sun safety. In addition, parents can have City lifeguards swim test their children to help determine the appropriate swim class for their child. Swim tests will be given from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

“Pool drownings are silent, happen quickly and are 100 percent preventable,” said Chris Smith, aquatic coordinator at the Hamilton Aquatic Center. “This free event hopes to educate our community about the importance of water safety.”

There were seven water related incidents in Chandler last year, including two drowning deaths, according to the Children’s Safety Zone, an organization that tracks drowning statistics in Arizona.

Teaching children to swim can reduce the drowning risk dramatically. A study published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine found that participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent among children ages one to four years.

Chandler’s Aquatics Division offers swim lessons at its pools and aquatic centers, including lessons for children as young as six months. For infants, parents accompany the child in the water and learn techniques to help teach their child water acquaintance safety skills, such as floating on their back, grabbing the wall and holding their breath.
