Volunteers needed for upcoming Operation Back to School Chandler

The City’s Diversity Office and its community partners have been busy preparing for this year’s largest back-to-school donation drive, Operation Back to School Chandler, which will take place on from 7-11 a.m., Saturday, July 22, at Chandler High School, 350 N. Arizona Ave.
Volunteers play a huge role in the event’s success, and there are plenty of opportunities to give back and volunteer this year.
  • Supply transfer - Volunteers are needed to transfer 1,000 backpacks from 73 S. Hamilton St., to 350 N. Arizona Ave. This task involves loading large boxes filled with backpacks into a truck, and then, unloading them at Chandler High School. Vehicles will be provided. This volunteer shift is scheduled from 8:30-10 a.m., Monday, July 10.
  • Backpack stuffing - Volunteers are needed to help prep and stuff the backpacks for the event. The backpack stuffing will take place over three days: Thursday, July 13; Tuesday, July 18; and Thursday, July 20.
  • Day before the event - This volunteer opportunity includes a variety of tasks needed to get the event ready for the big day. It’s not for the weak as it includes heavy lifting in the heat. Duties include: unloading supplies, putting up directional banners, table placement and set up of key distribution areas.
  • Event day – 150+ volunteers are needed on Saturday, July 22. Volunteers must be a minimum of 16 years of age. Duties include: line monitors, guides, staffing several distribution areas, registration (English- and Spanish-speaking), water coordinators, clean up and more.
"Each year, we get a huge turnout of families in need at Operation Back to School Chandler," said Vice Mayor Kevin Hartke. "It’s important to have our students ready for the first day of the school. But, none of it would be possible without our business, nonprofit and faith community partners and volunteers who make it happen. We recognize their incredible contribution and are grateful for their continued service to the community."
