Stimulus housing aid to help Chandler families

CHANDLER, Ariz. – October marks the beginning of a Chandler program that will utilize federal stimulus funds to aid homeless individuals and families and those threatened with homelessness.

The City received $575,271 from the Housing and Urban Development Department as part of the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program (HPRP), which allocated $22 million to Arizona cities and counties to help keep families from becoming homeless. In addition, those who are homeless can receive housing and other services.

Chandler’s Neighborhood Resources Division has partnered with eight local non-profit agencies to deliver the aid to Chandler’s homeless and at-risk populations.

These social service agencies help keep families in their homes, or help homeless families secure transitional housing. In addition to paying up to 18 months of rent, the program can cover various other costs, including rental arrears, utility bills, security deposits, and case management services, including housing placement for homeless individuals and families.

To be eligible, a person or family must have an income at or below 50 percent of the Area Median Income, or $32,950 for a family of four. They also must be homeless or about to become homeless, and have no other housing options.

Those needing aid should contact the Neighborhood Resources Division at 480-782-4320 to learn more about the program and receive a referral to the appropriate agency.
