Sept. 29, 2009 Chandler to unveil plans for widening Gilbert Road CHANDLER, Ariz. – Engineers will unveil their 60 percent design plans for widening Gilbert Road in south Chandler at an informational meeting to be held from 6 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the terminal building at the Chandler Municipal Airport, 2380 S. Stinson Way. Gilbert Road is primarily a two-lane road south of Queen Creek Road to the City’s border at Hunt Highway. Public comment is being sought on the design plans for widening the road to six lanes between Queen Creek and Ocotillo roads and to four lanes between Ocotillo and Hunt Highway. Construction is anticipated to begin next fall and will be phased over a three-year period. The first phase will occur between Queen Creek and Gilbert roads. Weekday traffic volumes along this stretch of Gilbert Road averaged 23,000 vehicles per day in 2008. The four mile, $21 million project will include landscaped medians, bike lanes, curb, gutter, sidewalks, right and left turn lanes, bus pullouts, and extensive water, reclaimed water, and sewer work.
