Special Planning Commission meeting scheduled

CHANDLER, Ariz. - The Planning and Zoning Commission will discuss the draft South Arizona Avenue Design Guidelines at a special meeting to be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, October 13, at the Chandler Police Department Community Room, 250 E. Chicago Street.

In January 2008, the City Council adopted the South Arizona Avenue Corridor Area Plan, which established a vision for creating an urban and pedestrian-oriented entryway along Arizona Avenue from the Santan Freeway to the historic downtown square.

One of the implementation steps necessary to realize the vision for downtown Chandler is to adopt design standards that will guide the building architecture and site design of redevelopment projects along the South Arizona Avenue Corridor.

These guidelines are different from the Arizona Avenue street and pedestrian improvements which are currently at 30 percent design, in that they apply only to properties located adjacent to Arizona Avenue and not to the public right-of-way.

More specifically, the guidelines will apply to properties located on both sides of Arizona Avenue between Pecos Road and Chandler Boulevard, excluding the historic downtown square.

Although they are distinct efforts, the design guidelines and the Arizona Avenue improvements have been coordinated and will continue to be refined through the public review and comment process.
