Aug. 25, 2009 Stimulus funds awarded to Chandler Police and Utility Departments CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Chandler Police Department will receive $433,610 in economic stimulus funds to purchase investigative and training equipment and to implement a new records management system.
The funds were awarded to the Department through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program which supports a variety of crime prevention efforts nationwide. The JAG program received stimulus funds from the U.S. Department of Justice under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
In addition, the Municipal Utilities Department (MUD) has been awarded $10,000 by the Water Infrastructure Finance Authority of Arizona (WIFA) to test a device that could improve the efficiency of water filtering equipment at the City's Industrial Process Water Treatment Facility (R.O. facility). Stimulus funding was received by WIFA from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The JAG grant will go toward the hiring of a person to manage the installation and configuration of a new police records management system. K-9 bite suits and equipment used in training police dogs to detect explosive devices will also be purchased, along with training aids and equipment for use in firearms training.
A license plate reader, portable radios, laptop computers, night vision apparatus and equipment used in accident investigations will also be acquired with the JAG grant funds.
The WIFA grant will allow MUD staff to pilot test an electronic precipitator at the R.O. Facility. The R. O. Facility was constructed in 1995 in partnership with Intel and recycles Intel’s industrial wastewater. The wastewater is cleaned to drinking water standards using an R. O. and microfiltration process and then returned to the aquifer.
The electronic precipitator is designed to help remove minerals from the wastewater before the water passes through R.O. filters, thereby increasing filter efficiency. The equipment will be tested for 31 days following installation and establishment of testing guidelines and protocols.
To date, Chandler has been awarded $23.7 million in stimulus funds. Visit www.chandleraz.gov/recovery to obtain information about Chandler’s stimulus funded projects. |
