  Summer 2010 positions include:
   * ASSISTANT POOL MANAGER: starting $15.12/hr
   * LIFEGUARD II (W.S.I.): starting $11.29/hr
   * LIFEGUARD I: starting $10.24/hr

All testing dates are subject to change
          without notification. Candidates will
          only be scheduled for one testing date.

  

  Temporary Part-Time Jobs 
   
  We are looking for part-time employees, ages
  15 and older, who want to contribute to our
  award-winning program. These positions are 
  temporary part-time, however, incumbents must 
  be available to work January through December 
  due to year-round aquatic programs. During
  “peak” season (May – July), employees have the
  opportunity to work 40 hours per week in the
  “off-peak” season (August – April) hours may
  vary from 5-20 hours per week. All candidates
  offered employment with the City of Chandler 
  are expected to work during the school year.

Certification requirements and courses

       

 

     

  Lifeguard & Water Safety Instructor
  Certification 
Courses
 
  All Aquatics job applicants must possess the
  required certification from the American Red
  Cross or be enrolled in the appropriate course.
  Attendance at all class sessions for the Lifeguard
  Training and Water Safety Instructor courses is
  required! No exceptions will be made. 
  Pre-registration is required. All fees must be paid
  at the time of registration. Fees include books
  and a pocket mask. Please refer to our
  certification courses refund, cancellation and
  transfer policy (at right) before enrolling in
  a class.
   
  
Acceptance of a student's registration form for
  the certification classes does not necessarily mean
  participation in the class. Students must successfully
  pass a prerequisite skills test to take part in class.
  Certification will be determined after students have
  successfully completed all required water skills and
  written exams. Failure to pass final skills tests and
  written exams does not allow for refunds.


     

  Certification Class Refund, Cancellation 
  & Transfer Policy

 
  A participant may cancel or transfer their enrollment
  by calling the Aquatics Office at (480) 782-2756 or
  480-782-2753, however the following policy will be
  strictly followed:  
   * 
Advanced cancellations 8 days or more prior
      to the start date of the class will be charged a
      50% cancellation fee. 
   * Cancellations 7 days or less; no refund will be
      issued.

  Lifeguard Training
 
American Red Cross 
  
  Teach participants the knowledge and skills needed
  to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies.
  The course content and activities prepare
  participants to recognize and respond quickly and
  effectively to emergencies and prevent drowning
  and injuries. Upon successful completion,
  participant will receive a certificate for Lifeguarding /
  First Aid: valid for 3 years and CPR/AED for the
  Professional Rescuer: valid for 1 year. This is a
  30-hour course. Class size is limited so register early!
  Please come prepared to swim each class session.

  Prerequisites:
  · Swim 300 yards continuously
  · Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front
  crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve
  a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20
  yards back to the starting point with the object and
  exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within
  1 minute and 40 seconds.

   

  Water Safety Instructor (W.S.I.)
  American Red Cross
 
 
  The Water Safety Instructor course teaches
  candidates how to teach the American Red Cross
  progressive Learn to Swim program. Candidates
  will learn how to teach swim lessons to any age
  group, including infants and adults. This course
  will provide the foundation for teaching in a safe
  and fun environment.
  This is a 43-hour course curriculum, which includes
  5 hours of the F.I.T course, and 8 hours of instructor
  candidate practical teaching time.
  
 
Prerequisites: 
   * 16 years or older by the last day of each course;
      and ability to perform proficiency in water skills
      test.
   
 
Water Skills Test: 
   * Demonstrate proficiency in the following strokes
      (25 yards): front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke,
      elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and butterfly
      (15 yards); maintain position on back for one 
      minute in deep water (floating or sculling); tread
      water for one minute (1:00).

Aquatic Training Programs for Youths


    

 

 

  Guard Start Program
  Ages 10 to 12
  
  T
his is a great opportunity to introduce pre-teens
  (ages 10-12) into a lifeguard program. Individuals
  selected for the program will meet for two hours
  twice a week and will receive free admission into
  the pool on their scheduled class day. This
  program requires dedication and commitment.
  Two three-week programs are offered at multiple
  aquatic centers. Enrollment is limited to 20
  participants per session date. 
  
 
A pre-skills test will be administered to determine
  participation. Testing includes demonstrating
  proficiency in freestyle and breaststroke, treading
  water, and basic safety skills. Additional skills may
  also be required.
  
THIS PROGRAM IS OFFERED DURING SUMMER SESSION ONLY

  Junior Lifeguard Program
  Ages 13 to 15
  
 
Jump start into a lifeguarding job!
  Participants will learn prevention, fitness, response,
  leadership, and professionalism through this program.
  Certified lifeguards and instructors will mentor
  participants through class work, lifeguard shadowing,
  assisting with lessons and participate in emergency
  in-service training. 
  
 
Participants will be required to complete the
  American Red Cross Guard Start Program.
  They will have the opportunity to obtain certification
  in Community CPR, Water Safety Instructor’s Aide
  and American Red Cross Level 6 Lifeguard Readiness.
  Class work and meetings will vary depending upon
  individual pool schedules. Participants selected for
  this program will be scheduled for various shifts
  each week depending on our availability and need.
  Shift work will include helping with lessons, lifeguard
  shadowing, patrolling pool area, enforcing rules,
  picking up trash and other lifeguard related duties.
  Participants will receive free admission into the pool
  during their scheduled work shift. This program
  requires dedication and commitment.

  includes demonstrating proficiency in freestyle and
  breaststroke, treading water, basic safety skills.
  Additional skills may also be required.
  
 
This seven-week program is offered at five aquatic
  centers. Enrollment is limited to 10 participants per
  facility. The program will meet two days a week plus
  shadowing work shifts.
