Motorized Play VehicleMotorized Play Vehicle Safety

Many youths are using motorized play vehicles to move quickly around their neighborhood, but this mode of transportation presents a number of safety issues. The Chandler City Council recently adopted new regulations regarding their use.

Below is a quick look at the City's rules when operating motorized play vehicles:

  • No altering of the vehicle from the original factory design, such as the removal of mufflers, is allowed, except for alterations to make the exhaust system more quiet than the original manufacturer's design.
  • Motorized play vehicles may only be operated between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
  • Operators must be at least 13 years of age.
  • Can’t operate on roads with four or more lanes or with posted speeds greater than 35 miles per hour
  • No riding on crosswalks or sidewalks
  • Must obey traffic control devices and traffic laws
  • No passengers allowed
  • Operation during hours of darkness requires a white light in front (500 feet visible) and red light in rear (300 feet visible)
  • Riders are asked to be respectful of their neighbors.
  • Operators under the age of 18 must wear a full-face protective helmet, as designated by the manufacturer and approved by the Department of Transportation.
  • Must wear shoes that have a sole and cover the entire foot.
